HACCP, ISO 22000, FSSC 22000 and BRCGS are related to food safety, but they are not interchangeable awards. Start by identifying your activity, customer requirements and the scope you need to address.
HACCP: a hazard-control approach
Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points focuses on identifying and controlling food safety hazards. A HACCP study needs to reflect the actual products and process. Staff training supports implementation, but a training certificate does not certify the food business itself.
ISO 22000: a management-system standard
ISO 22000 sets requirements for a food safety management system. Organisations considering certification should define the applicable activities and sites, review the standard and confirm the proposed certification scope with a competent certification body.
FSSC 22000: a certification scheme
Foundation FSSC describes its scheme as combining ISO 22000, applicable prerequisite-programme requirements and additional FSSC scheme requirements. Check the current scheme documents and transition arrangements rather than relying on an old course title or checklist.
BRCGS: check the applicable standard
BRCGS offers standards for specific activities, including food safety. Confirm which standard applies to your business and what your customer requires. Certification decisions depend on the relevant scheme and certification process.
A practical selection checklist
Identify your product and activity. Obtain customer requirements in writing. Check the scope and current documents. Assess your existing controls. Plan staff competence and internal verification. Confirm the certification body and proposed audit arrangements before committing to a certification route. No single framework is automatically the best choice for every food business.
